fix(retrieval): cache the whole result, so a repeat keeps its pincites - #86
Conversation
The retrieval cache stored only the selected section IDs and rebuilt a bare Result on a hit, without the evidence pages, cited pages, pages read or confidences a page strategy found. The answer path then took the section route, so the second time anyone asked a question within the TTL it came back with no pincites. Measured on the 3M 2018 10-K: 4 pincites on the first call, 0 on the identical second call. The cache now keeps a deep copy of the whole Result and hands each hit its own copy, with zero usage and the strategy's trace token. Three identical calls now each return 4 pincites, retrieval 0-2 ms on hits.

- Line 77: Update the cache handling in Select and SelectWithCost so an IDs-only
Result stored by Select cannot be treated as a complete cache hit by
SelectWithCost; keep IDs-only entries separate or treat them as misses so the
page strategy runs and can build pincites.

Reviewer's GuideThe retrieval cache now stores and returns deep copies of complete Results, preventing repeated queries from losing page evidence and pincites while ensuring cached results remain isolated from caller mutations and report zero usage on hits. **Cache hits report old request counts**
When the cached result has nonzero `HopsTaken`, `SelectWithCost` clears `Usage` but retains the cached `HopsTaken`; callers, including the page-answer path, report the previous retrieval's navigation requests as if they happened on this cache hit.
Clear `HopsTaken` on cache hits along with `Usage`.

**Hit mutations go untested**
When `get` returns the cached pointer instead of a copy, `TestCachedHitKeepsEvidencePages` mutates `first` at line 56, which is the initial miss result, then only reads the hit at lines 59–76. A broken `get` that returns the cached pointer still passes, although mutating a hit would corrupt the next result.
Mutate a field on `hit`, make another lookup, and assert the later result is unchanged.

**Other usage can remain nonzero**
When a cache hit retains nonzero output tokens, total tokens, or cost, `TestCachedHitKeepsEvidencePages` checks only `LLMCalls` and `InputTokens` at line 72. A cache hit that retains nonzero `OutputTokens`, `TotalTokens`, or `CostUSD` still passes, despite reporting usage for work that was not done.
Compare the hit’s entire `Usage` value with the zero value.
</issue_to_address>Review on #86: when Select filled the cache first, the entry was IDs-only and a later SelectWithCost hit served it without evidence pages. Select now goes through SelectWithCost whenever the strategy reports a full result. A hit also zeroes HopsTaken: it made no navigation requests. Tests cover both, and edits to a hit's result not reaching the next hit.
Compare the hit's whole Usage with zero, with every field set on the original run, rather than two fields (review on #86).
The retrieval cache stored only the selected section IDs and rebuilt a bare
Resulton a hit. That dropped the evidence pages, cited pages, pages read and confidences that a page strategy (judgewalk) found. The answer path then fell back to sections, so a question repeated within the TTL came back with no pincites. Production ran with the cache on.Measured on the engine-only self-host (image
